What Are Mini Dental Implants?

mini dental implant denture placement

Mini dental implants are made from the same high-quality materials as traditional dental implants, but as their name suggests, they have a much smaller diameter, so you might also hear these being called narrow-body implants or small diameter implants.

Unlike single tooth implants, mini implants have a screw instead of a post and are screwed into the gum tissue and straight into the jawbone, so there is no need for stitches during this process.

The actual design of the implant is slightly different as mini dental implants are a single unit compared to traditional dental implants that generally come in two pieces. The advantages and disadvantages of mini implants are described below.

Mini dental implants are still made from the same high-quality titanium alloy implants, but their smaller size increases treatment versatility. You may also hear these dental implants referred to as small-diameter implants or narrow body implants.

Mini implants can be inserted into less bone as the requirements for bone levels are significantly lower. While mini dental implants are excellent for helping to retain implant-supported dentures, they can also be helpful in situations where there simply isn’t enough room to place a traditionally sized dental implant.

Quality and precision are essential to produce aesthetically perfect dental mini implants. Microscope-assisted precision implants dentistry is used to enhance a dental implant specialist vision to unprecedented levels. It’s used in our NYC Dental Implants Center to polish and finish teeth margins and contour teeth and dental mini implants.

The diameter of a mini implant can vary from 1.8 mm to 2.9 mm. The implant screws may be 10, 13, 15, or 18 mm in length. The strength of a mini implant is determined by the length of the implant screw rather than its diameter.

Who Can Have Mini Dental Implants?

After natural teeth are removed, bone loss is a common problem as the jawbone quickly loses density and mass. It is also possible for the jawbone to deteriorate due to osteoporosis or simply as a natural part of aging.

mini vs traditional dental implant placementAlthough bone graft surgery can build up bone in areas where it is deficient, not everyone can undergo a  traditional dental implants procedure. In this case, dental mini-implants can be a good solution as they require less bone for placement.

Placement of mini dental implants in NYC may also be a good solution for replacing incisors and where there is simply an insufficient room to place a traditional-sized dental implant.

Dental mini implants can be beneficial for securing dentures. There is no evidence to suggest the success of this dental mini implant treatment is affected by age or gender.

What Is the Procedure for a Mini Dental Implant?

You will need a full consultation with Dr. Navid Rahmani to determine your suitability and to discuss this procedure in greater detail. If you decide to proceed, you will need a Cone Beam CT scan and digital dental x-rays.

Planning Dental Mini Implants

Mini dental implants in NYC are planned exactly as traditional dental implants, using computer-guided surgery to place them. Dr. Rahmani will create a surgical stent beforehand using the computerized information provided by your cone beam CT scan showing exactly where the dental mini implants will be placed.

Mini Dental Implant Procedure

The procedure to insert mini dental implants is slightly different compared to traditional dental implants as it is incision-free, and there is no need for stitches.

Often dental mini implants procedure can be completed under local anesthetic and may only take a couple of hours. Instead of making an incision in the gums to expose the jawbone, the dental implants are inserted straight through the gums and into the jawbone.

Thanks to faster and less invasive treatment, mini implants may appeal to people who are afraid of oral surgery or unable to tolerate longer surgical procedures.

The mini implants procedure is:

  • Less invasive
  • Has fewer side effects
  • Can be used to restore a small front tooth
  • Can be used to secure partial dentures

Recovery After Dental Mini Implants

This treatment is far less invasive and means healing is much quicker with fewer side effects such as swelling and discomfort.

Dr. Rahmani may provide antibiotics to be taken after treatment, and we may recommend you use an antibacterial mouthwash. After the mini implants are in place, they can be used to secure loose full or partial dentures or a small tooth.

Mini Implants to Secure Dentures

Dentures have special attachments on the fitting surfaces that will clip onto special attachments on the dental implants. These attachments are called O-rings. Your dentures can be fitted soon after surgery is completed, so there is no need to worry you will be left without teeth at any time.

Fitting the implant-supported dentures soon after surgery helps ‘splint’ the implant posts together, increasing stability and preventing movement during the healing process. A process known as osseointegration must take place in which new bone grows around the implant posts, fusing them in the jawbone. During this process, it is critical that the implants do not move, as even micromovements could prevent osseointegration from occurring and could affect the treatment’s success.

Replace a Small Tooth Using Dental Mini Implant

If your mini dental implant is being used to restore a small front tooth, you will be provided with a temporary tooth and eventually an implant crown once the front tooth implant has fully healed.

The temporary tooth is designed to avoid contact with the opposing tooth and should not be used for biting or chewing. During healing and osseointegration, it is critical that the implant underneath remains undisturbed.

Advantages of Using Mini Implants

This procedure can be quick as sometimes mini dental implants in NYC can be immediately restored with a new prosthesis. The surgery is less invasive than traditional dental implant surgery as there is no need for implants dentist in NYC to make an incision into the gums and no need for stitches. As a result, healing times are quicker, and there are fewer side effects such as swelling and discomfort.

The narrower dental mini implant screw makes it easier to avoid essential structures such as nerves and sinuses. The smaller size of a mini dental implant is reflected in a reduced price, and this can be a good solution for anyone wishing for affordable, high-quality implants, particularly when securing loose dentures.

Disadvantages of Using Mini Dental Implants

Although mini dental implants are suitable for areas where the bone is deficient, they still require a good volume of vertical bone because the screws are quite long. The length of the implant post gives a mini dental implant its strength and stability.

  • Require a good amount of vertical bone
  • A greater number of mini implants are required
  • Not recommended for upper jaw where bone density tends to be lower
  • Require between 10 and 12 dental implants to stabilize the upper denture

The O-rings used to secure dentures will need to be replaced regularly as they will start to loosen and will not hold the denture as securely in place. Depending on the amount of wear, the O-rings should be replaced every six months to two years. Although they are not expensive, replacing these fittings usually requires a visit to the dentist.

When used for denture stabilization, a greater number of mini implants are required compared to traditional dental implant systems.

Mini dental implants for upper jaw: Mini dental implant surgical procedure in NYC may not be a good solution for replacing teeth in the upper jaw where bone density tends to be lower.

Mini dental implants to stabilize an upper denture: When mini implants are used to stabilize an upper denture then this process will typically require between 10 and 12 dental implants.

This may mean more traditional dental implants are a more cost-effective solution comparing to dental mini implants.

Success Rates for Mini Implants

Mini implants have been much less widely studied than traditional dental implants, so there is very little long-term data showing success rates and longevity of this treatment. However, studies have shown that tiny dental implants have very similar long-term success rates to traditional implants. When planned and placed by an implant dentist with the proper training and experience, the success rate for mini dental implants is around 94%.

There is the potential for mini dental implants to last just as long as traditional dental implants, but expert mini dental implant treatment combined with continued dental care in our NYC Dental Implants Center is essential.

Risk Factors of Having Mini Dental Implants

The unique design of mini dental implants does mean they are only suitable for specific situations. That is why a careful evaluation of the bone volume and structure is required before surgery is carried out. Mini implant single-piece construction means that if anything goes wrong and the implant head wears down over time, the entire implant will need to be replaced.

What Is the Alternative to Having Mini Implants?

Alternative treatments include using dentures to restore missing teeth. Dental bridges may be used in any natural teeth that are present and are strong enough to support them. Traditional dental implants are another, more expensive option. Mini implants should be used in specific situations. If Dr. Rahmani suggests this treatment, then it is because he feels it will provide the most long-lasting and reliable solution.

How Much Do Mini Dental Implants Cost?

The cost of mini dental implants treatment is significantly lower compared to traditional dental implant treatment. That is because of the smaller size of the dental implants combined with quicker treatment times.
